Internationally acclaimed pianist Edward Neeman performed the twenty-four etudes in a fundraising recital to support the Friends activities associated with the 2nd Australian International Chopin Piano Competition.
Dr Neeman gave a masterful performance of the two complete cycles of Chopin Ètudes, op. 10 and op. 25. The range of piano techniques required of these compositions was handled with an ease that belied the difficulty and all the colour and nuance of the works were conveyed in such a way as to leave the audience in no doubt as to what Edward meant when he said:
‘The Études are really like little poems. They show Chopin’s gift for capturing fleeting moments of beauty. They are also really visionary in terms of the possible techniques and colours that can be used on the piano. I remember I got the chance to play some of the Études for Roger Woodward ten years ago, and I still remember him telling me, that after he learned to play the Chopin Études properly, everything else was easy for him. That’s the challenge for any pianist.’
Dr. Edward Neeman is an Australian American pianist, composer and academic who is a Notable member of the Friends.
